Stormwater Management

Overview

When precipitation (stormwater) falls on roads, streets, rooftops and sidewalks, it can push pollutants such as fertilizer, pet waste, chemical contaminants and litter into the nearest waterway. When these pollutants enter water bodies, they can contaminate drinking water supplies, hinder recreation activities, and harm aquatic and other wildlife habitats. In addition, improperly managed stormwater runoff can result in erosion and flooding. 

Wrentham Stormwater Management Plan

Wrentham's stormwater is regulated under the U.S. EPA National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Phase II Massachusetts Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Permit. This permit was signed April 2016 and became effective July 2018. The Department of Public Works collaborates with other Town departments to actively ensure compliance with the MS4 program by implementing the Town's Stormwater Management Program (SWMP).

The SWMP describes the activities and measures, or Best Management Practices (BMPs), that Wrentham will implement to meet the terms and conditions of the MS4 permit. The SWMP is intended to be a "living document", which Wrentham will update and/or modify during the permit term as new information is developed or Wrentham's activities are modified, changed, or updated to meet permit conditions.

Illicit Discharge Detection Elimination Plan

In compliance with the Town's MS4 Permit, Wrentham has prepared its Illicit Discharge Detection Elimination Plan (IDDE). The IDDE Plan establishes a program to systematically find and eliminate sources of non-stormwater discharges to its municipal separate storm sewer system and implement procedures to prevent such discharges.
